![]() Scenes from Scotland Glencoe in Winter. You would be forgiven for assuming that it's easy to photograph snow in Scotland. It does snow a lot here, and that in itself is the problem. The Pass of Glencoe has snow gates at both sides. Too much snow and the gates are closed, too little and the photography is poor. Glencoe is not really where you want to spend the night stuck in the snow:-) The weather changes quickly up in these mountains and that accounts for a lot of accidents and deaths in the winter months when the mountains are at their most challenging and therefore of most interest to the mountain climbing community. So far this year, 2004, I have only been up once as Scotland is not having a particularly severe winter. Maybe next year:-) ![]() Car,suitably loaded with space blankets, travel rugs, hot drinks and food, off we go to see the snow. This photograph shows what you see as you begin the climb up into Glencoe. The snowy mountains await you. ![]() Getting just a bit closer now, and you begin to see why it's not easy to get good photographs. The cloud cover is low and obscuring the tops of the mountains and no, you do not want a nice gust of wind to come along and move the clouds, that wind would be more likely to turn into a blizzard, spectacular yes, but not while driving up through Glencoe. ![]() As you continue to climb, the snow cover increases but still shows the winter colours of the mountain trees. ![]() This time while I was up there the weather did close in, making photography impossible, so this final photograph was not taken by me. I am displaying it here just to show off the beauty of the winter landscape. Hopefully we will get more snow this year and I will ba able to get more photographs, if not, then next year it is.
