A Journey to Iona......illustrated....Page Three
A Tourist for a Day.
At last we get to some photography:-) Click on the little pictures and larger ones will open in a new window, please do not take photographs from these pages, I will move be putting them in my free download area soon, thank you.
Watching Oban disappear from the outer deck of the Ferry.
Happily sitting on the Ferry watching the world go by as we make our way to the Island of Mull.
The car carrying ferries are too big for the shallow waters near Iona so to get there we got this ferry (a 40 minute crossing) to Mull then drove down to south western tip of Mull to the port at Fionnphort to get the smaller ferry to Iona.
There are very many beautiful places on Mull to explore but not on a day trip to Iona, so as I have already visited Mull we chose to go direct to Iona and come back to Mull another day.
Direct to Iona means taking your car off the Ferry at Mull then driving down 35 miles of the best in Scottish single track roads.
For the benefit of foreign tourists instructions are given on driving on these roads which is basically just being polite and pulling into a passing place if you see a car coming towards you.
It might be a good idea not to knock over any of the very many sheep which "own" this road:-)
We parked the car at Fionnphort, no traffic except for vechicles belonging to those who live on Iona is allowed on the Island.
As we waited for the small ferry to arrive I saw this beautiful rock formation on Mull.
Now I will have to spend some time on another of my hobbies, Geology, to find out more about these rocks.
The ferry for Iona soon arrived, Iona is seperated from Mull by only one mile of water.
That one mile makes a huge difference to the geology of the islands, Iona is very different to Mull
This time, however we did not go to Iona to look at the geology, perhaps next summer?
Our little roll on roll off ferry arrives and 15 minutes later we are watching it depart from Iona.
The buildings on the far side of the water are on Mull.
By now it is nearing lunch time so rather than start to walk up or be pushed up:-) some very steep hills then come back down for lunch we got sensible and had lunch first.
A very beautiful place to stop and rest before continuing with the tour of Iona.
This cat lying on an old hand cart outside the post office had the same idea.
