This is the famous Stirling Castle This castle was strategically important during the Wars of Independence as it links the South and North of Scotland. At that time it was considered to be one of the most impregnable castles in Scotland. It sits high on volcanic rock and commands a spectacular view over the surrounding areas. Access is through the old town of Stirling.
This is the Wallace Monument, it sits on a rocky craig from which Wallace watched the English army gather on the South side of Stirling Bridge. It stands a majestic 220 feet high with 246 steps to take you to the top. Inside are three chambers devoted to the memory of William Wallace. If you want to go right up to the top, look for one of the rare days where the weather is kind to Scotland:-)
This statue of William Wallace is on the side of the monument. About 30 feet from the ground and standing 15 feet high. The photograph was taken with a zoom lens from the ground. ( This little Scot, me, is not into climbing). Any volunteers to climb up for a better one, speak up now:-)
What price, Freedom??? Scotland has her fair share of youths who cannot even leave a national Hero alone. Monument now protected to prevent further vandalism.
Please press next for more photography or use the side menu to find Robert the Bruce. Jeaney:-)
